Question: Does anyone know of a sketching/painting program out now that simulates pencil but you can ”smudge” while drawing? I know Vellum iPad edition is being created right now (http://tinyurl.com/27o9l3k) and it looks amazing…but wondering if anything was available now.
not really, but vellum ipad looks great!
I’m puzzled, because Vellum on my iPad is unusable. The screen is just streaky noise. Vellum is even pretty sticky on my iPhone (4) these days.
Hmmm…Haven’t used it much lately, and I haven’t tried the current version on my iPad. The developer said that the iPad version is going to be a complete rewrite, so they are starting from scratch. My hope is that the end user will be able to export a high res image of their work. With the current version, it is almost impossible to do it.
Ok…Just found a cool app. It is a little buggy but it gives a good pencil look. It is called Colored Pencils app. Here is a sketch done with it.

could try layers app, that has a smudge tool and a pencil ish brush, other than that there is a colour pencil crayon app, not sure if it has smudge though, never used it.
I feel like I looked at Colored Pencils once, but I will look again – thanks for the reference.
As mentioned, Layers lets you smudge, so do ArtStudio & doodlebuddy. None are as specifically pencil-like as Vellum but doodleBuddy does a really great chalk pastel. On to look at Colored Pencils…
I just installed Colored Pencils right before bed last night and I totally agree with Philip – very good app. I like that it really gives me a great look and feel if I work from dark to light like I would do with a charcoal drawing. I also really like the ability to rotate the paper without having to rotate my iPad. I personally would have called it something like Charcoal or Pastel rather than Colored Pencils because I believe that title best represents what kind of results you get with the app. I’m doing more work with it this morning and hopefully will post some results by this afternoon.
Just added a skull study that I did using the Colored Pencils app. I drew from a darkened ground and you can see that the app does a great job holding the texture and values while being erased and/or drawn over with a lighter pencil.

Probably not exactly what you’re thinking of – but if you turn the Scratch mode on Vellum way down and use it very gently – it can create a ”smudgy” appearance.
Erik:
Very cool sketch. I really like working from dark to light too…and I agree, I think it is more of charcoal feel. I feel like this app could just offer black and white and still be great if they added realistic smudge (like charcoal) ! Probably easier said than done. that would be great!
Craig: I will have to try that. I am looking forward to Vellum for the iPad also, should be a good program.
I have been doodling with ArtRage and (in my opinion) found it to be the best actual ”sketching” app out there. The pencil actually looks like pencil, if you use the palette knife tool (i know it sounds weird) but it actually gives you a good pencil smudge. Once the lagging and crashes go away I think ArtRage will be my main app (until Vellum for iPad comes out
)
Have you found a color picker in Artrage ? There’s a ”picker” in the color wheel, but it doesn’t seem to be the same.
You need to drag from the color pod to pick colors.
Thank you Ben. It works !
