This was a quick sketch using another Android app called Magic Doodle. This is perhaps the most full-featured Android app available barring Autodesk’s Sketchbook because it has some limited layers ability as well as a number of wonderful built-in brushes that mimic everything from pencils to other kinds of paint.

This was made with an interesting Android app called DoodleDroid. It’s a pretty straight-forward painting program but comes with tons of built-in brushes.

TenOneDesign’s pressure sensitive code would certainly have gone a long way towards solving this issue. Honestly, I had assumed that the folks at Apple saw this software demo and would have incorporated the code into future firmware releases. I had hoped that we would have seen this capability on the iPad 2 since GarageBand for [...]

Oh by the way Valerie, your blog looks really interesting. I’m looking forward to reading your observations on the various painting platforms.

I’ll definitely try out Canvas. Thanks for the tip!

Regarding pressure sensitivity on the iPad 2, the technique apparently uses the device’s accelerometer. Since all iDevices have an accelerometer, all keyboard based music apps could be adapted to take advantage of this pseudo-pressure sensitivity. There was a piano app for the iPhone over a year ago that did in fact increase the volume of [...]

Genius! I need to buy more pants at the moment and suddenly cargo pants seem like a really good buying option.

Thanks for the very kind comments. As you’ve probably guessed, I’ve got an old Pocket PC loaded with paint and music programs as well. Amazingly, these pocket devices have been around much longer than Apple’s iDevices but didn’t catch on with the general public. I’ve just been watching Apple’s roll-out for the new iPad2 and [...]

ThumbnailThe Nintendo DS family of products makes for an interesting platform for the mobile digital artist. The two versions of the DS that are of most interest to the mobile artist are the original DS and the DS Lite. The reason for this is twofold. First, the original DS and DS Lite both have an undocumented [...]

Buying an Archos for sketching purposes is problematic, to be honest. I purchased an Archos 43 but the resistive screen was so sensitive that it was nearly impossible to use without a stylus. Using the onscreen keyboard was frustrating with my finger but very accurate with a stylus. Also, the 43 is a fingerprint magnet, [...]

I own an iPod Touch 2G and an Archos 43 running Android 2.2.  Both devices are pretty much on par with regards to tech specs.  If you do have an Android device or are thinking of purchasing one soon, here are three painting apps that might be worth your time. Paint Joy The first painting [...]

Hey all. I’ve only just realized that there’s a group here devoted to mobile music. I’ve contributed some on the mobile art side of this website but I’m happy to see that this area exists. I’ve been using NanoStudio and Xewton Music Studio on my iPod 2g and really enjoy both. Amazingly, they both work very well on my older device. I’ve posted a few pieces on Soundcloud created with these two apps. ”Mid-East Tension was created using Xewton, and Cosmic Dream was created using NanoStudio. Here’s the link:

I hope to be contributing a lot more in the future!

I’ve added a photo of my church’s outdoor creche that I’ve been slowly rebuilding and repainting over the past few years. It’s starting to look pretty decent!

I made this image last night on my Nintendo DS Lite using Colors 1.1. It just kind of came together without much forethought but it turned out quite nicely!

I’ve rediscovered Colors on my Nintendo DS Lite now that an update has been issued. On the DS Lite, you get the benefits of a pressure sensitive screen and a natural media brush has been added. The newer Nintendo DSi consoles do not have the pressure sensitive screen, though of course they are still touch sensitive. Therefore, you loose the ability to alter the brush size and opacity based on how much pressure you apply. There are some recent samples of mine on my Flickr page.

    Worked:
I’m very much in agreement with Kara. The food service was very much appreciated and was a very nice surprise to have something to munch on during the whole day. Likewise, the location was great, though some of the rooms were a bit small and crowded for some of the given presentations.

    Didn’t work:
While I thought the space was fantastic, the rooms were often too small for everyone who wanted to attend. I also thought the rooms that had one long table weren’t entirely conducive to lectures since it was very easy to have someone in front of you blocking part of the presentation screen. One of the rooms had a U-shaped table arrangement, which was very nice. It was very easy for everyone to see the presentation with no obstructed views.

At some point during the day on Saturday, the room numbers seemed to get switched around. Room 1 in the morning became another room number in the afternoon. I missed one of the presentations I wanted to see because I thought I was in the right room. However, I very much enjoyed the presentation I did see instead, so I’m not that upset!

Some of the presenters could have used more time. The presentation for ArtStudio on Saturday was too short at a half hour. I also would have liked to see more app-specific presentations. I understand however that these presentations only happen if there’s someone willing to give one and perhaps there just weren’t enough volunteers to present.

Having said this, the time I spent on Saturday was wonderful and I really appreciate meeting everyone there and getting some great tips and ideas for future projects.

      Pierre,
We were stuck in a bind with Meritum, ArtStudio, etc…..because we wanted to give developers adequate time to present BUT we were desperately trying to not make a situation whereby anyone who had MONEY could pay to present…..that got a little touchy, and some gave money predicated on their ability to present….we were in a Catch 22 there, because we needed to (and wanted to) have them talk about their product, but we didn’t want to give short shrift to any individual who wanted to present, because our collective knowledge was what drove the conference. That whole aspect…money, sponsorship, the right to sell one’s wares, is still a ”devil in the details” aspect that we’ll have to address better for the next time. I told Sandy here….I did the damned schedule (along with Craig), and I lamentably missed A LOT……..Believe me, when we began to add people, we started to say UH-OH…what do we do with this, and what do we do with this, and then a developer came on board at the eleventh hour and………etc, etc. SO, ultimately we said…o.k. at any other ”session conference” one has to choose regardless, and we did think that we would be having 250 people in that small space….so it was a choice….but we know how to do it better next time.

No problem John. I know that there had to be issues related to an increasing number of presenters, plus developers who wanted to show off their wares as well. As much as it was a ”complaint”, I’m still enormously happy that the whole conference went off as well as it did. You are all to be congratulated and thanked to the highest order!!!!
