I’ve been holding out for v2 of the iPad and will definitely be in line on the 11th! Although I’m glad the prices didn’t increase I’m also a bit disappointed that they didn’t upgrade to the higher retina display. I appreciate that we can output to larger sizes with some of the apps but I’d [...]

In the late 90’s Cynthia Breazeal introduced us to Kismet, one of the most captivating social-interactive robots of its time. Developed at MIT, Kismet looks like a cross between RoboCop and a Furby with lips. It was groundbreaking in its technology and AI. Since that time Cynthia has continued her exploration with social robots at MIT [...]

  • Hi Russ,
That’s so great you were teaching McLuhan in high school. I wish I had been exposed to him by someone who understood his work when I was that age.
Have you read, or heard anything about, the new Douglas Coupland biography on him? I’m curious.

I haven’t heard about the new biography but I will check it out. Thanks!

When I was watching the Mcluhan Speaks videos, I noticed that somewhere between 1968 and 1974 he grew that mustache. I wonder if Coupland will mention that in the new book!

This winter, here in Seattle (where I live), we had the good fortune of being the first stop for the traveling show from the Picasso Museum in Paris. It was a large show that filled several large galleries in the Seattle Art Museum’s giant new(ish) building. It was also a show that nearly spanned Picasso’s whole [...]

  • I am such a sucker for Books. (Books with a capital “B” because I find it impossible to participate in the current debate between eBooks and those ‘old-fashioned’ printed paper versions – to me it’s all about the information. Book is a signifier of information). So, with this touch of bibliomania, part of what I’d [...]

I’m honored and excited to be participating as a regular iAMDA blogger! Coming off the success and energy of the October conference this feels like a great opportunity to keep things going. For 20 years I’ve been working as an artist in somewhat traditional mediums. If not traditional, I was at least working with physical materials . [...]

I agree with John – establishing as a non-profit should be a priority. It can take a while to work through.

In reply to - Kara Jansson Kovačev posted an update in the group Post-Conference Discussion : I think for committees, we need: Non-profit status PR Web Education Conference Exhibitions Outreach Other media (photography/music/film/animation/programming etc.) Fundraising It would be great to have 3-4 people minimum on each committee. The conference planning piece needs to start now. We need a full year-especially if we [...] · View

I would agree with all of this. I like the idea of the panel discussions as well depending on what they were.
I think the beauty of having more time to organize and more participants is in the fact that the talks could be ’curated’ more. Having a conference under our belt and also having a full year to develop ideas will help.
Maybe it’s a matter of having a core set of presentations – and to Kara’s point, establishing these early on – but also again have a room dedicated to last minute or spontaneous discussions. I think if that’s announced as part of the conference structure, people may come prepared with something to present and take advantage of that.

Unfortunately, I think it’s inevitable to have overlap – that’s the beauty of the web thought, right? We can video everything and then make it available after the conference.

It was clear to me that our discussion on Sunday morning regarding where and how IAMDA should proceed was generating some good ideas. I think it was also clear to everyone that 45 minutes wasn’t going to take us far. Below are a few of my random thoughts based on what I observed over the weekend. Most of it is my opinion around certain issues, but they are all motivated by the desire to see the group not only sustain itself, but grow into something great.

Since we are a far-flung group organized around digital/mobile, it’s my feeling that the web-site is crucial and a key foundation for the organization. I feel it could function as a portal and offer access to everything and it would also allow for an organic development of the needs and wants of the IAMDA members.

I feel like this group could potentially position itself as the central organization around Mobile art
making. Not as the determinant of what Mobile art is but as a facilitator of the creative process.

The group’s strength is in its flexibility and responsiveness but it should also be clear in its direction and leadership.

At this point in the life of IAMDA, personally, I would be fine with a loose elected governing body that’s steering the organization. However, I’m less inclined to support a paid governing body. For me it’s still the spirit of art that engages me in endeavors like this.

Also, in my opinion, dues should only be charged if there is a direct, measurable return on their investment (meaning if they offset real costs in the working existence and member benefits of the group).

Based on what I heard around me during the conference this is a list of things that I think would be of benefit to myself and/or other members – in no particular order:

    - Making the conference an annual event – it’s a chance to establish deeper connections with each other. (and a chance to get out of town)
    - An organizing body that presents and promotes shows of Mobile Digital work.
    - A place for app developers and artists can openly communicate
    - A place for collaborative projects. Even if the work doesn’t live within the IAMDA site, it could be a place to connect.
    - A marketplace. (the money comes later but it always comes)
    - Reading list – would be great to have a place where books could be recommended and reviewed
    - Lesson plans. It was great to sit-in on the education forum at the conference. I learned quite a bit and I understood the deeper effects that this medium can have for kids and adults. (thanks to all of you that presented).
    - A blog space – It would be great to have a place where Mobile art issues, news and related tidbits could be posted and discussed.
    - Breakout focus groups that deal with specific disciplines like music, video, iphonography, fingerpainting, education

So these are my thoughts. I realize it might be a lot at once but maybe some of it will resonate with some of you. There might be a nugget in there can be a place to start a conversation.

  • Hey everyone – As I was figuring out my time in NY I saw this show that’s opening at the New Museum: http://www.newmuseum.org/exhibitions/429/

It seems pretty relevant to what we’re all coming together for this weekend.
