Those are all good points, Kara. I live in New Jersey, so the U.S. is certainly convenient for me. It was great to have solid representation from our non-U.S. members at IAMDA 2010, hopefully they’ll come again in 2011 even if it’s in the U.S. again.

Seems like we have a pretty strong contingent of members from western Europe.
If we go strictly by painting frequency, it should probably be Paris, since Patricio beats all of us combined. :)

This open-ended discussion about the future of our org is very cool and generating some great ideas. I wonder if it might also be a good idea to solicit members’ ideas in a way that would make it easier to collect and review everyone’s opinions in an organized way. Maybe we could put together a surveymonkey.com survey (I’m pretty sure it’s free) and send the URL of that survey out to all our members. The survey could pose suggestions about things like conference programming, the org’s mission, tasks we should take on, education, etc., and collect opinions in a reportable, ”quantitative” format. Information in that kind of format will probably be easier to translate into clearcut tasks and priorities than a long discussion thread.
I’ll volunteer to put together the survey, if folks think it’s worth doing.

    Benjamin,
If possible, it would be nice if the site recognized when it was being accessed via an iPhone or other mobile device, and served up the content in a mobile-friendly format. Buddypress says it can do that (http://buddypress.org/extend/plugins/), but I don’t know how much extra work it would be.

Something I’d like to see next time: Panel Discussions, where there’s a topic, a moderator and three or four panelists having a freewheling conversation about the topic. (Often the moderator is taking part in the discussion too.) At other events I’ve been to, the panel discussions are often the most lively and unpredictable parts of the program. For attendees, it means you get more points of view then you do from a single person delivering a presentation on a topic. Also, from the standpoint of accomodating everyone who’d like to present, it’s a way of giving more people a chance to participate within the finite hours of the conference (i.e., rather than a room being dedicated to one person’s presentation for an hour, you’re getting in 4 panelists.)

Presentation overlap is tough, but frankly, I’ve been to alot of events like this, and I’ve never been to one where there wasn’t overlap in the schedule. From a practical perspective, you want a lot of programming so that there’s variety and you’re covering the diverse interests of the attendees; but there are only so many hours in the day, so there’s got to be some overlap. Also, the flip side is that if there’s only one thing going on at a time, and you’re not interested in that particular thing, you’re kind of screwed. If the biggest problem at IAMDA conferences is, ”too many good things to choose from”, maybe that’s a good problem to have. :)

I think Mia’s got a good point that getting to the point of having actionable tasks should probably be a priority. So I guess that raises the question, how do we get to that point? Take ”influencing K-12 education” — how do we take that from a broad goal to an actionable project? Do we organize a committee to come up with ideas? Or do we start by crowd-sourcing it — using this site to solicit seed ideas from the membership, then maybe letting a small, education-savvy committee pick the most promising (and practical) ideas for execution. Maybe we could have a discussion group to gather ideas for each of the big topics of interest — education, exhibition, 2011 conference, promoting the mobile medium, etc. And then form small committees to funnel that collection of seed ideas into actionable projects.

In reply to - mia posted an update in the group Post-Conference Discussion : Wow, very good feedback. I have to say, I am in agreement about the appointment of committees–however, I think we need to decide and outline–not just our mission–but specific tasks we’d like to accomplish over the next year (with regard to that mission). For instance…it is clear that [...] · View

Patrick raised some great ideas and points in his post, and I feel like I want to spend some time really thinking about those ideas, and will have more to say about them. But one thing I think is critical is the question of leadership or a ”governing body” as Patrick put it.
IAMDA’s founding leaders did a phenomenal job of starting this community and organizing an amazing conference. Whatever shortcomings there may have been, they were hugely outweighed by the things that succeeded. That kind of quality doesn’t happen on its own, clearly the leadership put in tons of work to make it happen.
I’d love to see these same folks carry on as long as they want to and organize a conference for next year. But clearly, that’s not fair to them, and it’s probably not a good idea for the community, long term, to rely so heavily on a small group of people to be the main ”doers”. So I think the questions surrounding a governing body, and possibly other working committees, are very important.
I also think that, as we get more ambitious with what we want the community to accomplish, it will not be practical for the organization’s leaders to also be charged with organization the annual conference (assuming it becomes an annual event, which I’d certainly like to see.) So organizing the conference might be the responsibility of a separate committee, that reports to the governing body. As the organization tries to accomplish more (like some of the ideas Patrick mentions), there will probably need to be various committees of members charged with making those things happen, likely with some involvement and input from the leadership, but the leaders can’t do it all.
Maybe some of that is going on already, I have to confess I hadn’t been paying that much attention to how the conference or IAMDA was getting organized. So I apologize if I’m short-changing efforts that I’m ignorant of.
