James’ comment as to the touch interface plus the pressure sensitivity got me thinking about the hit and miss qualities of the Wacom Bamboo Pen and Touch tablet. My students that have used it have said that the tablet portion is fine but the touch features are somewhat unreliable. And also in line with James’ [...]

So we’re a day or two away from the big iPad 2 release. And last week’s announcement did seem to fire up a lot of the early adopters and get us to re-invest some interest in the now constant upgrade parade that Apple leads. But at this stage of the game, my current iPad does [...]

After thinking about it a bit more I guess that using this stylus would be akin to when Brice Marden began painting with a stick (http://www.kickingwind.com/assets4/marden.jpg). I love what Christopher said about, “getting separation from the screen.” Maybe I’m just too much of a drawer rather than a painter.

So it’s come to this. Are we this desperate to emulate natural media in a digital environment? First an admission: I’ve fallen prey to the “natural media” digital phenomenon. I regularly use a Wacom tablet with my computer instead of a mouse to gain “pressure sensitivity.” I like it when iPad apps have some sort [...]

I’ll come clean right from the start – I teach art and design . I’ve been through the proverbial artist education ringer; from high school, to college, to grad school, to now, teaching the very subject that I’ve spent the past 20 plus years formally studying. And now, here comes the iPad to muck it all up. Raise [...]

Just received my new Griffin stylus (http://www.griffintechnology.com/) and if you’re looking for an amazing drawing tool for your iPad, this stylus is it! Heft, firm tip, and responsiveness; all three major pluses!

I think that the boxwave, the griffin, and the targus are the same material. But I do think that they are better than the Pogo Sketch. I just can’t get a good ’feel’ for the surface with all of the soft fuzz on the tip of the Pogo.

yes i got one this week also. great stylus nice and wide to hold and a little weight to it. much better than pogo stylus, ive tryd every stylus i could find on ebay i have about 15, and the griffin one is easily the best i found so far.

I’ve got the Targus version and it really is much more responsive than the Pogo Stylus. Here’s a quick review/comparison:

      http://vimeo.com/14229229

However, I wouldn’t throw out the Pogo just yet. The guys over at TenOne have some interesting tricks up their sleeves, most notably, a very impressive pressure-sensitive demo:

      http://tenonedesign.com/blog/pressure-sensitive-drawing-on-ipad/

According to a recent Twitter inquiry, they’ll have something out in September.

I did see the pressure-sensitive demo for from the Ten-One Design Pogo group and I agree that it is very impressive. I hope that their tech goes through Apple’s tough review process.

So now if someone could just make a stylus with the rubber material from the Targus/Boxwave/Griffin with a point instead of a spherical surface… ;-)

      Erik,

There’s also the possibility that Apple will make some of those private API calls public to help out. We’ll know sometime this month. ;)

I just got the Griffin and it is identical to the boxwave but without the cool little leash. Both are very good though and more responsive than the pogo.

I got the Boxwave from Amazon UK and it works a treat, much better than the sponge one I made myself…
It even works with my Zagg screen protector, although it is a teeny bit squeaky.

I’m sooooo excited about this! We use ArtRage for all of our foundation courses and it’s magnificent. And after adding it to my iPad, it looks just as impressive on that as it does on the laptop/desktop. Finally, a solid natural media app for the pad!

Just added a skull study that I did using the Colored Pencils app. I drew from a darkened ground and you can see that the app does a great job holding the texture and values while being erased and/or drawn over with a lighter pencil.

So as many of the other members posted, I started as a purely traditional artist earning my BA then MFA in studio art (drawing, printmaking, and painting). Once I exited grad school I found a half-time teaching position, but unfortunately it had no long term outlook. So I began shopping my wares as an illustrator since I had solid drawing skills. Luckily a firm liked my portfolio and gave me a freelance job to prove my chops. Needless to say I did the job pretty well and on the first official day as a full-time illustrator I was sat down in front of a computer rather than a drawing board and told to learn Photoshop and Illustrator or I wouldn’t be much use to the studio. Long story just a bit longer, I did learn what I needed and kept going to then learn web design, animation, etc. So after a couple of small studio art director stints, I discovered that education was my true calling after all and I’ve been teaching art and design full-time since the fall 2001. The mobile bug bit me when I got my first iPod touch and installed Sketchbook Pro and Brushes. I had been using Sketchbook Pro with a Wacom for a while and discovered that I loved it even more with my finger. Then I got the iPad and, well, you all know how it goes from there ;-)

      Hi Erik,
Yes – it’s a familiar story, but one worth retelling. I think. I keep having this fantasy that somewhere on this site is a kind of digital Nell, raised in the woods away from traditional art making tools and references who has been making art entirely on iPods, etc. But it seems like most of us are coming from fairly traditional backgrounds.

Are you completely digital now? Or – do you still delve into printmaking and painting?

My path was in the opposite direction with Sketchbook Pro – I first ran across it on my iPod and have sense gotten the desktop version. It seems so drastically different from working on the iPod – though. I’m not quite used to it yet.

        Craig,

I still do spend a good deal of time working with traditional media in drawing, painting, and printmaking. The school at which I teach is a hybrid path for students – they are able to work across media and are taught from the foundations sequence up with both traditional and digital tools. So they keep me on my toes bouncing back and forth from getting dirty with charcoal to creating a bone system in AfterEffects. I had even thought about proposing a topic for the Con as to using mobile media to teach foundations courses and how it might influence the process.

I certainly agree that Sketchbook Pro is quite a different beast on the laptop than the iPad. I find on the iPad I tend to use softer brushes that are much more transparent to make up for the loss of the pressure sensitivity that a Wacom provides. But like you in reverse, I’m slowly getting used to the differences.

Hey Craig- That’s me. I’m Nell. (it could even be a nickname for Helene). I really only started doing art when I got my iPhone and Brushes. Of course, I spent a lot of time looking at art throughout my life and even took a couple of basic art classes in the 60’s at UC Berkeley, but basically I’ve only painted on my iPxxxxxxxxxxxs. I’ve been struggling to catch up: watching art documentaries, looking at artists on Google, but mainly I learn from watching my friends on Flickr and experimenting. I’m trying to figure out photoshop elements so I can make my prints look decent, and I want to use a tablet someday, but my love is fingerpainting on my ithingies.

I just installed Colored Pencils right before bed last night and I totally agree with Philip – very good app. I like that it really gives me a great look and feel if I work from dark to light like I would do with a charcoal drawing. I also really like the ability to rotate the paper without having to rotate my iPad. I personally would have called it something like Charcoal or Pastel rather than Colored Pencils because I believe that title best represents what kind of results you get with the app. I’m doing more work with it this morning and hopefully will post some results by this afternoon.

I have a DSi XL and I love Art Academy and Flipnote Studio. They just lowered the price on the DSi and DSi XL because of the new DSi 3D coming out, so for any who are interested, now’s the time to pick one up.

      Hi Erik –
And Flipnote Studio is free, right? At least it was when I downloaded it onto the DSI I hijacked from my daughter. Have you made much with it yet? If so – I’d like to see it. I have barely messed around with it but have not gotten very fair. It feels clunky to me – not as responsive as the apps on my iPod. But – again – I’ve barely scratched the surface with it.

Flipnote is indeed free. I haven’t made too much with it, but I do use it with my son to teach him some basic animation principles. He finds it easier to use/understand than applications such as Flip Boom. But I agree that Flipnote is a touch clunky. We also play around with Animation HD on the iPad and he seems to follow that as well as Flipnote.
