My first camera phone was a Sony Ericsson years ago. It took terrible photos, but it was such a novelty to take photos with a telephone! Now my iPhone is my only camera. Well, apart from the camera on my Galaxy Tab. And oh yes, there’s even a video camera on my iPod Nano! But I no longer have a dedicated camera. The only thing I miss is an optical zoom.

PS …And oh, I forgot. There’s a camera in my MacBook too. Come to think of it, I have cameras everywhere – except in a camera.

I think you know about Magic Brush and Canvas. Autodesk Sketchbook Mobile is newer to Android and best of all so far – so I think anyway. See a few Android / iPad comparisons at http//:www.OWLER.com/-blog.

I had a look at Auryn Ink. Can’t think why it’s called Ink, as it’s a watercolour app.

I don’t want to do it an injustice, as I’ve only had a quick look, but it seems to have much less to offer than Art Rage. For instance, only two papers, and Art Rage has many. Yes, in Auryn Ink you can control the wetness of the paper, add more or less water to your brush, and even tilt your machine for the colour to run downwards. Ingenious, but Art Rage too has many ways to adjust your paper, water and pigments, and offers other media too – oil, pastel, airbrush etc. No denying Art Rage is sometimes too clever for its own good, falls flat on its face and crashes, but it’s much more comprehensive.

Thanks for explaining Garage Band pressure sensitivity Christopher. What a shame we shan’t get wacom-style painting sensitivity after all. I wouldn’t want to press so hard I shoved the machine about! That’s along the lines of asking me to shake my iPhone for Undo. I never do, as I’m afraid I might accidentally let go [...]

I would be very interested in a London IAMDA meet-up! At first I thought the Portrait Party meeting at the Festival Hall was an IAMDA meeting – see

I’m going to that of course, (2pm on 5th December at the Festival Hall) but am not primarily a portrait painter. I co-presented with Julia Kay at the IAMDA Con, but that was on iPxxx apps. I would especially love an IAMDA meeting in London. As you see in my earlier post below, I live in Worcester Park – on the southern boundary of Greater London.

An IAMDA conference in London would avoid language difficulties for those of us who speak English anyway. My language abilities stretch to Spanglish and School French with a smattering of Latin and Anglo Saxon, none of which are much use for a conference…

By the way, while I’m on about this, does anyone know how I could contact the group who linked with New York from St Martin’s School of Art at the IAMDA Con?? I was there at the NY end, but can’t find out any more about it. Who organised it? Is there any more going on there? How do I get in touch?

I registered ages ago, am doing a joint presentation with Julia but don’t know anything about tickets. Where do I find out if I need one, and if I do, where do I get it?

In reply to - Helene Goldberg posted an update: How many people are signed up at this point? It seems like a lot if you are running out of tickets. · View

There’s a list of hotels near(ish) to NYU at

I am staying at the Holiday Inn SoHo, and am wondering if any other IAMDA people will be staying there?

I live in Worcester Park – nowhere near Worcester but close to Wimbledon, South London. Actually I managed to find a custom package to New York with Thomas Cook at a (fairly) reasonable price so won’t be here for the time of the conference. I’d love it if somehow we could form a UK group though!

You’re not alone! I’m a mini-gadget freak and I can already feel my fingers itching… I wonder if the new Nano will take apps. For me, the iPad, though nice to use, is just too big and heavy.

In reply to - Roberta Barbarić posted an update: Hello colleagues Did you see the new logo for iPod nano? For some reason I think the author was inspired with our logo. It looks as if they took a look at our logo and got the inspiration. I would love to hear your opinions. http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/ · View

I’m puzzled, because Vellum on my iPad is unusable. The screen is just streaky noise. Vellum is even pretty sticky on my iPhone (4) these days.

In reply to - Philip Vetter posted an update in the group App Machine: Question: Does anyone know of a sketching/painting program out now that simulates pencil but you can ”smudge” while drawing? I know Vellum iPad edition is being created right now (http://tinyurl.com/27o9l3k) and it looks amazing…but wondering if anything was available now. · View

Thank you. Fascinating article! Interesting that Hockney paints such huge canvases and then sends tiny pictures from his iphone. I tweeted the link.

I spent hours hunting for a reasonable price for the visit to NY. I had hoped to use Air Miles, but haven’t got enough. In the end I managed a custom package deal with a big firm here in the UK, Thomas Cook. I was really chuffed to discover it ended up as HALF the price I would have paid for hotel and flight separately!

I am staying at Holiday Inn SoHo. Unoriginal perhaps and still a bit pricey, but at least it’s one of the hotels recommended by the NYU site. I would rather have had something cheaper and more exotic, but I’m no student any more, and I reckoned a big chain would be more reliable. I’m only staying 3 nights, Fri, Sat, Sun.

I do recommend looking around for a package, as you can save quite a bit.

There are some colour apps you could look at: – Mill Colour, Peppermint and ColorSplash. I have Mill Colour and Peppermint, but haven’t used either yet so can’t tell you anything about them. Truth to tell I found them a bit daunting. You might like to explore them though.
